Mu Cang Chai, 6:00 AM, October 2, 2026
As the first rays of sunlight emerged over the mountains of Northwest Vietnam, the starting area for the 160km race at the Mu Cang Chai Ultra Trail 2026 came alive with a mix of excitement and tension. Hundreds of runners, equipped with fully loaded trail backpacks containing all mandatory gear, quietly warmed up, checked their GPS watches, and exchanged final words of encouragement before embarking on the demanding 160km journey ahead. The race was scheduled to start at 6:00 AM and is the longest distance in the event.
Energetic music echoed through the valley, blending with cheers from family members, tourists, and volunteers. In the cool mountain air of October, runners crowded the starting zone, their eyes fixed on the mountain ranges gradually emerging from the morning mist. Everyone understood that they were about to undertake a challenge lasting up to 48 hours, with a total elevation gain of approximately 7,800 metres.
Right on schedule, the starting horn shattered the early morning silence. The stream of athletes began to move, starting with cautious first strides before quickly stretching into a long line winding through terraced rice fields and highland villages. Spectators lining both sides of the route applauded continuously, creating the vibrant atmosphere of an international sporting festival. This year's event attracted around 3,600 athletes, including approximately 200 international participants from 18 countries.
More than just an endurance race, the 160km course offers a remarkable experience through forests, mountain slopes, and Hmong villages during Mu Cang Chai's famous golden rice harvest season. Runners will face many hours of continuous running through day and night, testing both their physical strength and mental resilience on one of Vietnam's most demanding trail-running courses.
6:00 AM in Mu Cang Chai is more than just the start of a 160km race. It is the moment when hundreds of runners begin a journey to push beyond their limits amidst the breathtaking golden season of Northwest Vietnam, at its most beautiful time of the year.
